Landscapes

The deserted plains, grand plateaus, deep gorges, mysterious caves, magnificent beaches, picturesque natural pools, hidden lagoons, and fascinating stone structures make a timeless picture, looking as though it was painted in the prehistoric times. The majestic cliffs rising over the ends of Socotra look like gigantic castellated walls of medieval loopholes. They were the first objects that saluted the ancient sailors’ eye.

Endemic Birds

There are 9 endemic birds on Socotra Island: Socotra Sunbird, Socotra Starling, Socotra Golden-Winged Grosbeak, Socotra Bunting, Socotra Buzzard, Socotra Sparrow, Socotra Cisticola, Socotra Scops Owl, and Socotra Warbler.

Flora

Scientists first reached Socotra in 1880 when Scottish botanist ‘Isaac Balfour’ collected around 500 plants, of which over 200 species were new to science. It is believed that some of the strange-looking plants are in fact ancient remnants from a much larger land mass which have been preserved here as a result of the fact that Hagghier Mountains have not been totally submerged for several million years.
